New Product Review: Shure MXA910 Ceiling Mic Array
A constant challenge with large meeting space conferencing applications is utilizing microphones to cover a large number of participants. There are many ways to accomplish this, each with varying degrees of success, for customer concerned with quality sound and aesthetics. People want to be heard, but typically do not want to see the microphone. However, microphone performance is largely dependent on the proximity of the individual speaking and their distance to the microphone element. The greater the distance between user and microphone, the more sensitive the microphone needs to be, which can result in the pick-up of more ambient room noise, leading to a “tin can” experience.
Recent audio technology advancements have come a long way in solving this problem. The Shure MXA910 Ceiling Microphone Array utilizes Steerable Coverage™ Technology, which uses up to 8 separate lobes to capture sound sources emanating from above more accurately. The MXA910 also has fine tune controls for pickup pattern focus and sensitivity. This helps eliminate much of the ambient room noise, resulting in each participant being heard more clearly, as if speaking directly into a microphone. Most important is that the MXA910 is virtually invisible, in most installations, as its form factor fits perfectly into a 2×2 ceiling grid, resembling a common return air vent.
Trinity Video’s Engineering and Integration team recently completed Shure’s MXA Series Technical Training Course and have already had several successful deployments with outstanding results. We look forward to introducing this technology into our future system designs and upgrading existing conferencing environments.
